BIOGRAPHY
Ron in 1979
Early Life Born in Lawrence Kansas in 1959 and lived in Kansas City, Ks. In a middle class family. I started playing trumpet in school. I cut out the Archies records on the back of Honey comb cereal boxes and bought Partridge family albums.I remember seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. My grandad groused about their hair and the music not really being music. Mom and her sister Linda just sat quietly, knowing the futility of a response. My first rock music was Grand Funk railroad Closer to home. Today that is still cool music.
When I was about Ten my father had a multi band weather radio and one day while playing with it I discovered FM rock music. In those days every city had several low power under ground radio stations. These 'under ground' stations were rich in variety and character. In those days the DJ was a powerful figure in society. And the culture of the 60's was in full swing. I was scrolling the dial that day and suddenly out jumped the voice of Alice Cooper singing 'Be My Lover'. Galvanized and mesmerized, instantly I knew that I had found my place in life. I was a flower child there after. I began recording every thing that touched me and became aware of the times I was living in.
As a young teenager a few years later I went to my first rock concert, Bachman Turner Overdrive at an old venue called the Cowtown Ballroom in K.C. Mo. That place has been torn down these many years but I lost my hearing and saw my first stage show there. Got my first magic. I remember standing at the front of the stage next to a girl who was obviously very high just going crazy to the music. I remember looking at her thinking wow she is just too stoned. I looked up at Randy Bachman playing guitar a few feet away from me, he looked at her and then at me, there was a sadness in his eyes as he observed the spaced out chick flailing away and I knew then that sometimes things are not all right in eden. Somehow it shaped me a certain way inside. I was a little sad for her too.
At Thirteen I got a Tesco electric guitar that year for Christmas and became very dedicated to the task of becoming a rock-n-roller. Learning how to read sheet music by playing trumpet in the school band gave me an advantage and I worked hard on that first axe. I've been a rock -n- roller ever since but when I play acoustic some how a completely different kind of music comes out of me. Its hard to explain but its very true. Theres two of me. One is a flatpicker for sure.
Building guitars
I'll never forget how I came to building musical instruments. I dated a girl in a music store where I made rent to own payments and one day, as we talked, there in the store I made the comment that I was 30 some years old but had not saved any money and old age would probably require me to build something and sell it at the flea market to stretch my social security.I remember looking up at a long row of guitars and remarking that mabe I'd build guitars one day. To which she replied “Yes I believe you could” I said “If I ever do I'll name them after you, which I did. I did then and still do love the girl. Her nickname was Kelly, christian name Emily Caroline. She helped me through some rough times and was a true friend. In honer of her I kept that promise to call the guitars I build Emily Caroline guitars. Now you know. I pay my debts, keep my word and remember where I came from.
My guarantee
Buying something on the internet that one normally feels and touches in person requires a lot of trust. Let me say that I'm not a merchant or a business man. Sure I possess some attributes of those types but inside I'm a musician first and foremost, just like you, not a bean counter. I throw a lot of wood away that accountants would keep and build lesser quality instruments with. I build every guitar like I'm going to keep it and play it for myself. I do the same thing with the pickups I build. Thats my promise to you the customer. I don't pass off cheap sounding guitars to students and amatuers. Emily Caroline builds only professional and master grade guitars that feel good to play and sound great!
